Accuracy of The Film's History
This film, "Hotel Rwanda," is historically accurate as it is made only ten years after
the genocide; in fact the year the movie came out marked the 10th Anniversary since
the genocide. Because the events are so recent and
fresh, there are many witnesses and victims that could have been called on to
relate information to the film team to be taken into account to add to the
accuracy of the movie. Paul Rusesabagina himself talked to the makers of the
movie and gave them tips and ideas of what to add and what not to add while
making the movie. As he is portrayed as the main hero of the film, this is a
very positive step that they have made to make their
historical film historically accurate. The makers of the
film also had access to a variety of different special effects that they could
add in to make the movie more realistic to the actual event such as blood,
their access to the African locations for filming and their ability to transform
an old hospital into an African hotel. Because of modern technology
they were therefore able to make the film as accurate as possible. Since this
film was so recently made, hardly any new information has been found out about
the genocide and so it is still relevant to modern audiences in today’s society
to learn about the history of our world. However, the fact that modern film
requires film makers to take into account certain factors to make movies
entertaining to audiences and also successful in selling well at the theatres,
this may make the film less reliable. Also, films of the drama genre need to
stick to specific guidelines to make them acceptable as drama films and so this
also lowers the historical accuracy and reliability of the film to
audiences.
